End-to-End OAM Overlay

Ethernet services offer bandwidth and cost efficiency compared to the legacy offerings they replace, but vendor-specific implementations often prevent streamlined operations, administration and maintenance (OAM), driving up OpEx and placing significant demands on support and operations staff.

Accedian Networks hardware-based, high-performance EtherNID ® and MetroNID ® packet assurance demarcation units help operators regain control of their Ethernet services, increasing the value of every packet flowing through their networks. Installed as a transparent, in-line service demarc at customer premises, cell-sites, carrier hand-off points, hubs, aggregation nodes, COs and mobile switching centers, EtherNID and MetroNID units define the boundaries of your network and services without impacting customer traffic.

With a well bounded network, EtherNID and MetroNID units allow service providers to establish standards-based service, connectivity and link layer OAM over their Ethernet services from end-to-end, fully compliant to IEEE 802.1ag, 802.3ah, and ITU-T Y.1731.

Accedian products' unique all-hardware, Fast-Thru™ architecture overcomes all of these shortcomings by processing Y.1731 - and all other packets - directly on the wire. This means no software, queuing or CPU delays, and a blazing 3µs processing time for any and all traffic - up to a hundred times faster than today's switches and routers. This dedicated silicon, pipelined architecture scales effortlessly to manage large numbers of OAM sessions between cell sites and the MSC.

This allows operators to implement Y.1731 for each class of service, to all cell sites, and terminate thousands of sessions at the MSC with unrivaled precision. The units also support one-way measurements using the Y.1731 standard. Operators can rely on this high-performance OAM implementation for rapid protection switching, with continuity check messages sent as often as 10 times a second. Performance monitoring can also be conducted in real-time with per-second granularity, providing detailed trending, proactive QoS alerts, and reliable measurements for SLA reporting and assurance.

In addition to precise performance monitoring, EtherNID® & MetroNID® units designed for cell site installation can perform full-line rate loopbacks - responding to any standards-compliant network element or test equipment. The MetroNODE 10GE™, designed for installation in-line or out-of-band at the MSC, can initiate Y.1731 loopbacks, link-trace and performance monitoring tests to base stations and cell-site switches or routers, dovetailing seamlessly into existing operations as a head-end Maintenance End-Point (MEP), test head, and monitoring probe.
