U.S. Carrier Ethernet Revenues Hit $6 Billion in 2011

U.S. carrier Ethernet services sold by cable, incumbent and competitive service providers topped $6 billion in 2011, according to Vertical Systems Group. Those figures suggest why the business is more attractive to specialty providers than to the tier one providers in the U.S. market.

In a U.S. market with annual service revenues topping $300 billion annually, a $6 billion market, even if directly related to the rest of the core capacity business, isn’t a big enough revenue generator for a firm the size of AT&T or Verizon to spend too much time thinking about.

Big carriers need big markets to make any impact on their revenue top lines, or bottom lines. That tends to leave the niche opportunities to smaller providers whose cost structures are better aligned to $100 million opportunities than $5 billion opportunities.

It is, on the other hand, a very attractive business for smaller competitors to whom $100 million in annual revenue is highly significant.

Also, as is typical of capacity products, revenue growth was accompanied by a compression of average selling prices, a pattern that is typical of the capacity business overall. Carrier Ethernet grows

4G Might be Single Most Important Carrier Ethernet App of 2011

By some reasonable accounts, carrier Ethernet has boosted HSPA+ performance enough that it can accurately be described as “4G,” at least in terms of potential bandwidth. That might qualify wireless backhaul using Ethernet as the most-important single carrier Ethernet application, in terms of customer impact.

But a change in business customer bandwidth buying would run a close second. Many would argue that 10 Mb/s Ethernet is the new T-1.

According to Vertical Systems Group, most business buyers choose access speeds someplace between T-1 at 1.5 Mbps, to T-3, at 45 Mbps.

Carrier Ethernet is the most popular technology choice within the intermediate-speed category, Vertical Systems estimates. By 2014, Ethernet connections will exceed all other intermediate-speed options by a factor of about 2.5, Vertical Systems Group also predicts.Carrier Ethernet enables 4G

Infonetics Research has increased its long-term forecast for carrier Ethernet equipment from $37.5 billion to $40.2 billion by 2015.

The largest downward changes are in the Ethernet microwave and VDSL equipment segments, and the largest upward change is in the hot carrier Ethernet switch segment,” said Michael Howard, principal analyst for carrier networks at Infonetics Research.

Infonetics expects the global carrier Ethernet equipment market to finish 2011 up 15.7 percent to $32.0 billion, following a 30.5 percent hike in 2010.

Service provider investment in carrier Ethernet equipment continues to outpace overall telecom capex, which Infonetics expects to be up six percent in 2011.
