SK Telecom plans to begin providing commercial 4G Long Term Evolution services in Seoul in July 2011 and later upgrade its LTE networks in 2013 to LTE-Advanced (LTE-A), repurposing its second generation frequencies in the 800 MHz bands. The LTE-A upgrade will offer speeds up to 75Mbps downlink speed and 37.5Mbps uplink speed on 10 MHz of spectrum

SK Telecom also is upgrading its 3G network in April 2011 to HSPA+, the fastest 3G version and operating at speeds the International Telecommunications Union says are officially “4G” networks.

As other LTE providers have done, SK Telecom plans to launch ‘LTE data modem handsets’ in July this year at the time of LTE commercialization and expand its LTE handset lineup to smartphones and tablet PCs within the second half of 2011.

SK Telecom also will adopt its own cloud-based network technology, “Smart Cloud Access Network” to set up its LTE network. With SCAN, SK Telecom successfully separated the Digital Unit (DU) and Radio Unit (RU), the two main components of a base station.

DUs will be stored together in one area, while Remote Radio Units (RRU) – along with the antenna – moves that the company says will offer network operation efficiences. Also, with full-fledged application of cloud computing technology, the network will be able to flexibly and seamlessly handle mobile data traffic that varies by time and region.

The company plans to expand its LTE coverage to 23 cities including the Seoul metropolitan area, providing nationwide coverage (82 cities) in 2013.

Global Wireless Capex to Grow

Capital expenditures by the top 100 global telecom operators between now and 2014 suggests carriers collectively will decrease their capex-to-sales ratio to 16.5 percent of revenues by 2014, down from 18.4 percent of sales in 2008, but will increase overall expenditures slightly, shifting more capital to wireless projects.

With industry revenues expected to grow at a modest two percent a year to 2014, overall capital expenditure will remain stable (0.7 percent CAGR) to 2014. Wireless access infrastructure, already accounting for 43 percent of total telecom infrastructure capex, will increase its overall share as spending continues to shift away from fixed infrastructure.

Mobile Carriers Adding 3G Small Cells

Some 58 percent of mobile operators recently interviewed by Infonetics Research report that they will deploy small cells (microcells and picocells) by the end of 2011, and 68 percent plan to in the future, a clear indication that use of small cells is a growing part of 3G network coverage plans.

By definition, new small cells will require new backhaul facilities. About 150 operators are actively deploying a single (no TDM) all-IP/Ethernet backhaul in some part of their network in 2011, up from 25 in 2009 and about 100 in 2010, Infonetics says.

Since one can assume that small cells are designed to beef up capacity in areas of high usage, and since the traffic demands are driven by Internet traffic, not voice, one also can assume that Ethernet backhaul will be almost certain choice for new microcells and picocells.
