Unified Control Plane Eludes Carriers

Efforts to get widespread carrier adoption of a multilayer control plane, spanning the optical network up through Ethernet and Layer 2, continue to be hindered by carrier reluctance to change key operating practices, it appears.

“If I hearken to my experiences with the carriers, there hasn’t been a lot of takeup of this application,” said Karl Horne, senior director of portfolio management at
Ciena Corp.

GMPLS, which has been an IEEE Communications Society effort, isn’t the only control plane work that’s out there. The International Telecommunication Union and Optical Internetworking Forum have completed some specifications, too.

It’s also worth noting that a control-plane change is a complicated chore for a carrier, said Vishnu Shukla, a principal technologist at Verizon Communications.

“When we are going to change the control plane, we are changing the process. Changing the process in the network is slow, because there is already a process in place which works,” Shukla said. “One of the gating items is to convince our operations people that this technology works and that it makes life easier.”

Thanks for your posting on this web site. From my very own experience, occasionally softening upward a photograph may well provide the photographer with a little bit of an artsy flare. Oftentimes however, that soft clouds isn’t exactly what you had as the primary goal and can quite often spoil a normally good image, especially if you thinking about enlarging this.

  2. Only wanna input on few general things, The website style and design is perfect, the written content is really good : D.

I believe everything said made a great deal
of sense. However, think about this, what if you wrote a catchier post title?
I am not suggesting your information isn’t good., but suppose you added a headline that grabbed a person’s attention? I mean Unified Control Plane Eludes Carriers | (Accedian Networks’) EtherNEWS Blog is kinda plain. You could peek at Yahoo’s home page and see how they write post headlines to grab viewers interested. You might add a video or a picture or two to get people excited about what you’ve got to say. Just my opinion, it might bring your posts a little livelier.

  5. Great article . Will definitely apply it to my website
